What Windsor Offers to Pinellas Students:
Ellen Kennedy Mosall
I am the grandmother of two Windsor students. I have been reading all these posts since this Facebook page was created. I am so impressed with the dedication, passion, and determination of all of you parents. I have been an avid volunteer for my children's schools, my church and other organizations. I have never seen or been a part of a movement like this. I have been so moved by your passion that I will be there in support on Tuesday. Can someone post the address where the meeting will be held. Thank you. Looking forward to being a part of this fabulous group.

Ms. Lisa asked me to share. I thought it was awesome !
Good Evening,
My name is Lisa Mosall and I am a parent of two boys that attend Windsor Prep Academy in St. Petersburg Florida. I was born and raised in St. Petersburg and I attended public schools here within Pinellas County. Those times were different though so much so that when I attended Azalea Middle School we were the Blue Ribbon School of Excellence. Now at the same schools I attended students are throwing furniture at staff members, yelling and cursing at them. These are not schools that I want my children to attend yet after the School Board meeting this Tuesday that could very well be the fate of my boys education. I am asking that the School Board vote NO at this Tuesday's meeting to close our school.
Were we mismanaged my Newpoint Education Partners? Yes.
Were staff members told if they voiced their concerns that they would be fired? Yes. Did Newpoint take money from the schools when they shouldn't? That is to be determined.
Out of the 5 current Board of Directors for our schools 4 new members have been voted in since March 2016. When the news came out that Newpoint was not supporting the school as they should and that there was a possibility that Newpoint had been stealing money from children those Board Members that we had all quit on the school. Marlin Hayward, Kay Rizzo, Barbara Clark and Robert Pergolizzi were all past board members. Currently, only Mr. Pergolizzi is still on our board. Jackie Taylor and Deborah Peterson were voted in on March 29th and dedicated parents Chris Wenzel and Megan Smith were voted onto the board March 17, 2016. I am pointing these dates out to signify how quickly these people have been working to right the wrong of the schools past and how hard they are working for our families, our children and our staff members. As Board members you have families and other obligations on a daily basis that you come up against. Our new board has put together a CAP, a budget, they are working on curriculum for next year all while meeting with payroll companies, technical companies, insurance representatives, attorney's the list goes on and on. Why am I stressing this to you? They are working so hard because they see the good in this school and I again implore any of you to do the same. Please allow us the time to right the wrong of the past and create a success story for Pinellas County. Our county has seen enough down fall with failing schools and the non involvement of families of which I assure that is not the case at Windsor Prep Academy and East Windsor Middle School. Our parents are involved, we have showed gains of coming from an "F" to a "C" 2 points from a "B" and have wait lists for enrollment. What we need now is to collaboratively work together so that Pinellas County shines from a success story. Please vote NO Tuesday and allow our school the last year of it's charter to show all the good things our school brings to this Community.
Thank you for your time,

Dear Board Member,
I am a parent of two students at Windsor Preparatory Academy. It has
come to my attention that your board is voting regarding the termination
of our school’s charter. My children have been at Windsor since the day
it opened. They started in kindergarten and are now in 3rd grade. I
knew long ago that our local elementary school was not going to be a
good fit for us, so we applied to every fundamental, magnet and
reputable charter school in driving distance. Unfortunately, neither one
of my children was awarded a spot at any of those schools and the
waiting lists were incredibly long. We were fortunate enough to find
Windsor, which offered everything we were looking for in a school and a
very convenient location.
I am aware of the current financial situation, as well as other concerning issues that the school is facing at this time. Although, I have recently discovered that the enormous debt we supposedly accrued has been “forgiven”, which should significantly improve our financial status. I can also understand how this looks on paper, but I am asking you to consider beyond the paper before you make this decision. As I’m sure you are aware, many things that look great on paper turn into epic failures. Likewise, many things that look grim, turn out amazing. Unfortunately, it wasn’t until this past year that many of us parents were aware of the mismanagement by Newpoint Education Partners, and the terrible situation they were putting our school in. Once we discovered there was an issue and our school was in trouble, we joined forces to identify and correct the problem. It is no question that the previous board of directors failed us by putting too much trust in the management company. You requested a plan of action from Newpoint and the former board, but they abandoned us. As a group, the parents and faculty worked diligently to have a new board put in place and have been taking steps to have Newpoint terminated as our management company. Today we have a fully engaged board working tirelessly to make permanent solutions to ensure the stability and longevity of our school. This new board has only been in place for about 2 months and has had a huge mess to tackle, but they have made leaps and bounds in that short period of time. As parents, we learned that teachers were not provided the materials and support needed to do their job. We again banded together to help fund these efforts. Our Board of Directors has been meeting biweekly, not to talk about changes, but to actually make changes. The faculty and staff have been equally dedicated to our children, putting in long hours and taking on additional responsibilities.
Personally, we have been fortunate to have had wonderful teachers every year and I feel that my boys are getting a fantastic education experience. They are excited to go to school and love to share things that they have learned, which often seem far beyond their age. I feel comfortable leaving them at Windsor, because I know that the teachers will protect them as their own. There is no bullying and there are no real behavior problems. They started learning Spanish in kindergarten and cursive shortly after and now are doing powerpoint presentations. I had recently noticed the decline in programs and the teacher turnover, but now I understand why. Though many of our teachers have held strong through all of these struggles, I can’t fault those who had to pursue alternatives to provide for their families. It is not our intention to put a Band-Aid on this and move on with a blind eye. We have identified the problem and begun taking action to ensure this never happens again. The indictment of Newpoint goes to show that Windsor, it’s staff and our students have been victims of malicious behavior by a company and individuals who blatantly abused the system. We have learned from this, and intend to self-manage as a non-profit so that we can have true transparency and put the money back into our kids, where it belongs. I understand there is a tremendous amount of pressure on the school board to make this go away, but it’s too late, the damage is done, the best option for all involved is to recover and be triumphant.
I read an article published 5/10/16 regarding the “transformation zone” and the aggressive efforts being made by the PCSB to transform 7 failing school into successful schools. According to the article, the county’s plan includes recruiting top teachers by offering higher pay (as much as $25k more annually) and better training, and encouraging parents to be involved with monthly activities. A parent from one of the schools mentioned that he believes it’s the lack of parental involvement that leads to behavioral issues that affect the education of the kids. I think it’s fair to say that is a well-known problem, which has contributed to the popularity of “choice” schools. The frustrating part is that we have created the exact goal of your project at Windsor. We have students that want to learn, teachers that are dedicated (while receiving lower than average pay), and parents who are very involved. We are not asking for additional funding, we are simply asking for time and support. We are also not in need of a Task force director (with a salary just shy of $100k) to oversee us like those schools in the “transformation zone”. Tax-payers want to know where their money is going, so I’m sure there would be no objections to closer oversight by the PCSB. There is no one looking to profit from this. Our interest is our children’s safety and success. I have never seen a group of people band together so quickly and with such power as Windsor families.
With all due respect, the notice we just received to start looking for alternative schools is no better than finding out on the first day of the next school year. The lottery (which is basically like hitting the powerball) for choice programs has long been over, and the programs for late application do not include any elementary schools. This means we would be forced to return to our zoned school, find a way to fund private school or quit our jobs and homeschool. None of these are acceptable options, especially when we have an amazing school already. Why displace hundreds of kids and leave dozens of teachers and staff unemployed, when this is a situation we are capable of recovering from. You are dealing with a group who wants and is willing to work for true success in our students. I have been fighting for my children since they were in the womb, and I have no intention of giving up now. What kind of example are we setting by throwing in the towel? When things get tough, it’s time to bail??? Is that the mentality we want to endorse? These kids are our future. Our school and our children were victims of criminal mismanagement, by closing our school when we are working so hard to turn it around, you are basically kicking us while we are down. Instead, you should be offering support. Why punish those that want to succeed? Like you, my job involves children’s futures. Some of whom are air-lifted in from outside hospitals that were not equipped to properly treat them. They come to us in multi-system organ failure. On paper their prognosis is not good, but we don’t treat the paper, we treat the patient and we don’t give up when things look grim. Because of that, many kids are saved and go on to lead healthy productive lives. Please look beyond the paper, give our kids a chance. We want to give you another “A” school, and we are prepared to fight for it.

One thing the Pinellas County School Board might want to consider is the higher than average percentage of gifted students attending this school. Especially since the gifted population in Pinellas County is already under served. There is only one full-time gifted elementary program, and three full-time gifted middle school programs. Out of almost 100 schools!

One thing the Pinellas County School Board might want to consider is the higher than average percentage of gifted students attending this school. Especially since the gifted population in Pinellas County is already under served. There is only one full-time gifted elementary program, and three full-time gifted middle school programs. Out of almost 100 schools!
Which means that at most Pinellas County Schools, gifted students are stuck in a regular class with many low-performing students and only get pulled out a few hours per week for gifted services. For this reason, far too many of our gifted students are being neglected and not reaching their fullest potential. However, gifted students at Windsor have the best of both worlds-- they are in an advanced general education class and also pulled out for additional advanced academics and enrichment.
In just the past two months, more than two dozen potentially gifted students have been identified at Windsor and a another half dozen student have already been found eligible for gifted services and are scheduled to enter the program at Windsor within the next two weeks. In addition, there are many more awaiting screening and/or testing yet to be identified.
Closing Windsor would not only be a huge disappointment to all the Windsor families, teachers and staff members, but would also deal another crushing blow to the already under-serviced gifted students of Pinellas County.
The Pinellas County School Board claims to value parental involvement in education. I hope they will prove this by honoring the involvement of these Windsor parents in their children's education which obviously began long before they enrolled them in this school.

I just saw an article about how the PCSB is working to transform 7 failing schools by recruiting the best teachers, offering higher pay, better training and encouraging parents to get involved with monthly activities. The article mentions one of the parents beliefs that lack of parental involvement leads to behavioral issues that affect the education of the kids. This news infuriates me because this has been my feeling all along. Like many Windsor families, we are zoned for terrible schools. At Windsor we have exactly what they are trying to create, kids that want to learn, dedicated teachers and staff and parents that are very involved. We are not asking for more funding...just time and support. The truth is our school and students were victims of criminal actions by NEP and company. By closing our school when we are fighting so hard to turn it around, they are literally kicking us while we are down, when they should be offering support. I plan to be positive and professional, but I think this should be addressed.

Ms. Lisa's email to PCSB
Good Morning,
My son has attended Windsor Prep since 2nd grade, and my daughter started Kindergarten this year. They both love the school. They both have excelled in the classroom and have wonderful teachers. They both feel safe and have made many friends. The staff and teachers are some of the best I’ve ever been around, even when I was a student. You always have that one or two teachers that leave an impact on your education growing up as a child - Windsor has multiple teachers that have and are continuing to leave an impact on these young minds. The amount of involvement, dedication and passion from them, and the parents of Windsor, prove that this school can succeed without the corrupt oversight of a management company. The strength through adversity the teachers and parents have shown through this very difficult and uncertain time should not be cause for concern, but an opportunity for the school board to make an informed decision based on facts, and help the district set an example of what a great school can be with parental involvement and dedicated staff. The facts are the parents have rallied together, removed the corrupt members of the BOD, and installed two parents on the BOD along with an educator and an accountant. Their hearts are in it, not only for the school, but our community as a whole. Our education system in this county, and our country, is in peril. Allow us to set a new standard for community-involved education. Our kids are worth the fight, and our community is worth the improvement. All of our futures depend on it. We love Windsor. Windsor Families = Windsor Strong!

Proud to be a part of such a strong movement!
I am emailing due to the recent concerns regarding Windsor Prep Academy and East Windsor Middle Academy.
I would like to explain my story on hopes that it does not fall on deaf
ears. My son Ryne enrolled when Windsor first opened their doors.
Beforehand he attended a private school which is our church. Looking at
our future as a stay at home mom with 2 children with education as a
major priority my husband and I sought out all options that we felt
would give our children the best path. Enter a Discovery Night at
Windsor. We came, we fell in love and we were blown away that this new
school offered our family everything that our private school did sans
tuition and faith. He has now been at Windsor since the doors opened and
is looking forward to being on the 5th grade patrol unit and the
basketball team (yes Windsor has a girls and boys basketball team of
which our girls took the trophy by winning a tournament held between
other local charter schools.
My Son Aiden has been enrolled
since Kindergarten. He is in Mr. Fleming's 1st grade accelerated class.
Those classes are built up of students that have an EP for gifted, are
in the process of gifted screening or who have extremely high test
scores. Aiden is loving his project based learning class and he recently
did a Power Point Presentation to present to his class.
Both of
my children are having their EP meetings today as they have been
identified as gifted. I can not tell you how important their education
is to me. I can not begin to tell you how much I know that Windsor has
brought out the best in my children.
I may also tell you that in
April 2013 I started my employment at Windsor Prep. I have been the
Administrative Assistant and Office Manager to Mrs. Clements and to now
Ms. Fly. I do the tours and Discovery Nights now and hear the struggles
that families have within the public school system. I feel their pain as
I myself was a parent trying to find the one school that gave my
children exactly what I as a parent wanted them to receive.
Our
school offers Enrichment programs on a daily basis examples Mad Science,
Karate, Gymnastics. We have a full sized gymnasium that allows us to
offer Basketball and Volleyball (next year) to our Middle School
students. We have a before care and aftercare on site the YMCA. All of
these great programs that our families love.
I know that Newpoint
Schools served our school, students, faculty and families a major
disservice and I am asking that you look at what is happening at our
school now with our NEW Board of Directors in a new light. I understand
the jobs you have as the School Board to make sure that all students
have the opportunity to learn and grow in a great learning environment,
but before you make that final call have you been to our school? Have
you met our staff? Have you walked the campus to meet these children,
families and staff? No, unfortunately, you have not. I implore each of
you to reach out to me and set a time where we can walk the premises. To
speak to our educators to see what Windsor really offers before you
make this vote to close our school. I know that if you come and visit
you will see our gaining students (we have brought our grade from an "F"
to a "C"), staff that goes above and beyond and families that show up
every day to volunteer their time to make our school great. It saddens
me that only finances are the topic right now. I know that there are
great concerns, but until each of you walk through our campus I do not
believe you have a full depth of our school. Our new Board of Directors
are working towards making this school a success story. I ask that you
also listen to the changes that we are making and reconsider this vote
and grant us our last year as we move forward to insure that our
students have all that they need to be successful.
Mr. Wolfe has
come to our school and spoken to me about how great our students are.
Mr. Wolfe has told me how nice it is to walk into an environment where
the students engage him and speak to him as he does his walk throughs. I
ask that before any vote is made that you extend the same courtesy to
the students, families and faculty.
We are aware that struggles
have been brought to us, but we will not turn our backs on the duties
that we have as parents. faculty and members of the community. I ask
that you allow us to stay open this final year and see where this great
school will take us.
Thank you for your time and consideration,
Lisa Mosall

Proud to be a part of such a strong movement!
Proud to call her one of my best friends and Trevor's Aunt. Such an amazing letter she wrote. Brought me to tears.
Hello Ms. Matway,
I wanted to personally reach out to you, and thank you for attending the Windsor Board meeting last night. While I do not have a child that attends Windsor, my nephew is currently enrolled in the Kindergarten. I've had the privilege to personally watch him thrive at Windsor, excelling in many subjects, and taking a genuine interest in his education. He is an outgoing boy, with astonishing social skills, and Windsor has played a significant impact in honing those skills while making him an attentive learner. When I spend time with him, I get to hear all the positive stories about what he's learning, how amazing his teacher is, and even about the fun he has interacting with his peers in class. I’m a member of this community, and I know the importance of having a great school in your neighborhood. It builds ties to the community, provides a safe place to learn close to home, and really gives a sense of community pride. This school has had its fair share of hiccup’s, and growing pains but what has happened within the school, and community over the last few months is nothing short of astounding! I have watched these parents pour their hearts into this school. They have gone above and beyond the call of duty to make sure that not only their children but that future children have a safe place to grow both academically, and socially. They have fought long and hard, dedicating hours upon hours of personal time to establish a new board, and work towards the common goal of a fully functioning school, that successfully operates to educate, and empower children. Before making a final decision I ask that you take into consideration these children, their families, their extended families, and all of the future families. Some of these children will be sent to D, and F schools if they cannot attend Windsor, further complicating matters for them. Please hear the stories, listen with your heart, and your brain. All these families are asking for is a chance, a chance to let their children continue to thrive educationally in a safe environment. Watching my nephew flourish at Windsor has been a pleasure of mine. Seeing his spirit and enthusiasm to learn both in the classroom and at home is incredible. I know that the Windsor staff has made this possible, and for that they should all be applauded. Thank you for listening, and taking all aspects into consideration when making your decision. The community supports Windsor, and I look forward to watching this school blossom to its fullest potential.
Best Regards,
Kristin Turner
